Reading STW

Customer:Kennet Properties

Value: £6.6 million

The reclamation of the former Reading Sewage Treatment Works was required to assist development of the 26-hectare site for residential and commercial end-use.

The project involved the demolition of the existing structures and buildings, and the break-out of concrete.

Throughout the project, VHE sought to maximize the recycling and re-use of site-won materials by:

  • The break-out and processing of 72,000m³ of concrete for re-use
  • Screening 350,000m³ of marginal materials for re-use on site
  • Processing 40,000m³ of materials for re-use within the infrastructure works as pipe-bedding, road sub-base and capping and structural backfill.

The project required the diversion of existing surface water and foul water sewers, following which we carried out extensive earthworks involving 350,000m³ of cut to fill to provide construction platforms for future development. A total of 53,000m³ of hazardous material was removed to landfill. The site was then re-profiled to enable its future development.
