Rugeley Eastern Bypass

Customer:Staffordshire County Council

Value: £2.0 million

This contract, part of the reclamation of the 52-acre former Lea Hall Colliery, was to construct a new link road between the A51 and A513 trunk roads connecting the development plots and the adjacent power station to the existing road network.

The works consisted of the construction of a new 1km single carriageway with drainage and services. Two new roundabouts connect the road to the power station at the western end of the site, whilst the connection at the eastern end incorporates a canal crossing.

The work also involved:

  • A 6m deep rock cutting
  • A structure over a live B class road
  • New service installations and diversions
  • Re-engineering of 60,000m³ of colliery shales, sand and gravels to form engineered embankment.

The project was carried out as a partnering agreement with designers, Staffordshire Engineering Consultants, under the New Engineering form of Contract Option C.
