VHE was initially appointed for the construction of 3km of single carriageway as Phase 1 of the scheme.
This involved excavating 130,000m³ of material and importing 200,000m³ of material to prepare the site for the road and drainage works, including the construction of two roundabouts. Material from the site required further processing to reduce levels of contamination.
VHE was later awarded the contract for Phases 2 and 3 involving the construction of approximately 2.5km of single carriageway, partially in cuttings and partially on embankments up to 6.5m deep and 11m high respectively.
These phases also required the construction of three roundabouts on ground underlain by coal measures with a history of former mine-workings. Additionally, the works required the design and construction of a box culvert storage sewer and a 35m span equestrian footbridge including sub-structure design. Associated work included demolition, traffic signals and the treatment and removal of Japanese Knotweed and hemlock.
