This large domestic remediation contract involved 26 properties constructed during the 1970s on a former gas works.
Some of the properties were constructed above buried storage tanks and investigations revealed the presence of contamination associated with the former gas works.
The contract included the demolition of two semi-detached houses and two garages, excavation and disposal of contaminated materials from depths up to 4.5m, temporary support works, groundwater monitoring and the reinstatement of turf, paving and fencing, with a high emphasis on resident liaison. This included presentations, public meetings prior to starting work and regular bulletins.
The scheme required VHE to work around people’s homes while they remained fully occupied and minimising disruption. VHE carried out extensive monitoring of vibration, dust, noise, vapours and odours to ensure the controls did not compromise the comfort and safety of the residents.
The project was completed on time and under budget despite encountering some major unforeseen challenging situations.
