The works required remediation of the garden of a property by the removal of 200mm of contaminated soils and to hard landscape the entire garden area with raised soft landscape areas above this. A cat protection device was also installed around the boundary of the garden to ‘contain’ the resident’s cats within the garden area.
Due to the size of the garden, the presence of various services and the possibility of archaeological remains below the work area, it was necessary to use a mini excavator and small dumpers to carry out the works. An archaeologist was present on site during all excavation works due to the site being within the grounds of a medieval church and burial ground.
During the works, a buried circular brick structure was found containing tar. It was necessary to stabilise the material and approximately 352 tonnes of hazardous waste was removed from the site and replaced with imported natural material.
