Wharf Road, Stamford

Customer:South Kesteven District Council

Value: £0.5 million

The Council determined the site as contaminated under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act following the discovery of eight classes of pollutants contaminating groundwater and the River Welland. The former gasworks was to be redeveloped into a public car park.

The works involved:

  • Temporary closure of the car park and removal of street furniture
  • Break out of 5,000m2 of tarmac overlying cyanide, benzene and hydrocarbon-contaminated hotspots.
  • Excavation of 2,400m3 of contaminated material and removal to a hazardous waste landfill.
  • On-site treatment by bioremediation of up to 400m3 of material.
  • Crushing, screening and processing of 4,000m3 of material for re-use on site.
  • Grading of the car park’s sub base and re-surfacing 223 car parking spaces.
  • Installation of pay stations, lighting columns and barriers.
  • Installation of drainage including new gullies and a petrol interceptor.

The scheme involved the first ever use of innovative electrical tomography monitoring under the CLARET (Contaminated Land: Assessment of Remediation by Electrical Tomography) programme, funded by the DTI.
