26 residential properties were identified to be contaminated by Galligu, so were determined as contaminated land under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act. Galligu is a by-product of the late 19th century soda-ash manufacturing process.
Hard surfaces were removed together with existing fencing and boundary walls in order to enable excavation to a pre-determined depth of circa 500mm. Following the off-site disposal of approximately 700m³ of arisings (ash and galligu), clean capping was imported to bring the gardens up to the previous levels.
The remediation works encompassed a total of 1260 square metres of garden area. To complete the scheme, a concrete slab was placed over the gardens to act as a preventative barrier. Localised repairs were carried out to existing adopted sewers to the rear of the properties.
VHE carried out hard landscaping to the requirements of each householder including paving and the erection of new fences as each property remained fully occupied throughout the works.
