Our first project for Taylor Wimpey North Yorkshire was for the redevelopment of a former abattoir site at Aiskew, near Bedale.
The project involved the demolition of the abattoir and associated cold store and then the remediation of the site for the construction of a range of private dwellings. The work, undertaken on a design and build basis, was completed in two phases with the second phase involving the demolition of the existing cottages on Rigby Terrace and the remediation of the site for further development.
Extensive health and safety measures were required, including a type 3 asbestos survey (Demolition or Refurbishment Survey), to remove the asbestos sheeting before demolition of the existing buildings.
On the project, extensive recycling of existing site materials was carried out for reuse within the subsequent construction phases, such as crushing the concrete for reuse as Type 1 sub-base and pipe bedding for the roads and sewers. The amount of material disposed of to landfill off site was kept to an absolute minimum and comprised of demolition materials and some waste tyres.
