At Colburn, near Catterick, we carried out the demolition and remediation of the former CPM pipeworks factory site.
The site was being prepared for residential development with Taylor Wimpey having purchased 60% of the 12 Hectare site to create 270+ units. VHE undertook the design and build remediation of the whole of the site through Taylor Wimpey working under licence for the remainder of the site on behalf of current landowner Kingerlee.
Our contract included extensive tree clearance, the demolition of existing buildings including asbestos removal and the break out and recovery of concrete foundations and hardstandings for recycling into construction materials. The scheme also included the remediation of two former landfill areas on the site.
On the project, extensive recycling of existing site materials was carried out for reuse within the subsequent construction phases, such as crushing the concrete for reuse as Type 1 sub-base and pipe bedding for the roads and sewers. The amount of material disposed of to landfill off site was kept to an absolute minimum and comprised of demolition materials and some waste tyres.
