Remediation and infrastructure construction on the former Bridon Wire Ropes factory site to enable the construction of a new 300 unit housing development.
The works comprised breaking out extensive slab and foundation for recycling and processing for reuse within the drainage and road construction elements of the package. The civils elements included Section 278 works, service installation, large diameter attenuation drainage on the site and outfall construction across flood plain, require Environment Agency and Local Authority liaison.
VHE added value by processing over 18,000m3 of concrete from the break out operation into certified aggregates for reuse within the adoptable roads. We produced:
We also produced over 7000 tonnes of class 6N material which was exported to another current road project for use as backfill to structures under a major highway. Surplus subsoil and topsoil from the highway project was returned loaded to the project at Retford for use in gardens, thus reducing haulage costs and the carbon footprint of the scheme.
The remediation included careful and selective excavation of contaminated hotspots followed by ex-situ bioremediation to facilitate re-use of material or disposal of untreatable material. The provision of clean subsoil and topsoil was also undertaken as part of the 6 month contract.
The tender scope was originally to only carry out the remediation of the site. However, VHE identified the value of materials along with the programme gains that could be generated by combining the remediation and infrastructure works into a combined package. This led to both cost and time savings for the developer and allowed them early access for the construction of the houses.
