North Huyton Remediation

The remediation of two parcels of previously developed parcels of land together with the provision of roads and sewers for the Revive Consortium at North Huyton near Liverpool. The consortium comprised of Keepmoat plc, Gleeson Homes and Lowry Homes.

The made ground on site contained elevated concentrations of arsenic, zinc and benzo(a)pyrene, which are considered to cause an unacceptable risk to human health. The made ground was required to be placed a minimum 600mm below the finished ground level to allow a cap of clean material to be placed upon completion by the developer. This comprised of 450mm of subsoil and 150mm of topsoil within garden areas, the remainder of the site was covered by hardstanding.

  • Excavation of 11000m³ topsoil, validated and stockpiled for developer
  • Removal of hard surfaces and underground structures and processed for re-use
  • Excavated 38000m³ of made ground to a minimum of 600mm below finished ground level
  • Screened 38000m³ of made ground to remove oversized element
  • Crushed 8000m³ of oversized material for re-use within infrastructure works
  • Excavated borrow pits to source 20000m³ of natural material for use in garden areas, validated and stockpiled for developer
  • Burial of 20000m³ of contaminated material within the borrow pits

New sewer systems were constructed on both sites and connected to the existing main drainage systems for the area. This included 250m of diversion works to the existing sewer systems on Hillside Avenue. 500m of main access and estate roads were also constructed on both sites.

The scheme provided development plots to enable a 370 unit housing development. This will be split between private and social housing.

The developers requested that they wished to start the housing scheme before the completion of the remediation works. VHE agreed to an early section release of specific areas to enable the developers to commence their works.
