Eagle Iron Works, Oxford

Customer:Berkeley Homes

Value: £1.0 million

The 1.13ha former Eagle Iron Works was located in Jericho, a vibrant district of central Oxford and was to be developed for residential end-use.

Access to the site proved challenging together with the close proximity of existing dwellings.

The Phase 1 reclamation works involved the clearance of vegetation and removal of hard-standing and historic structures followed by a cut and fill earthworks operation. Approximately 7,300m3 of contaminated soils were excavated. A passive barrier to the south and south-west of the site using an impermeable membrane and concrete-filled trench was also constructed. 4,000m3 of hydrocarbon-contaminated material was treated using a heated biopile, enabling bioremediation to be carried out over the winter period and on a smaller footprint. Clean material generated from the bioremediation was also used to infill the excavated areas.

Phase 2 involved the off-site disposal of approximately 650m3 of hazardous material, 1,800m3 of non-hazardous material, and 4,300m3 of U1/inert material.
