After a previously successful contract to construct a new 1,000,000m³ capacity cell in the landfill at Albion, Swadlincote, VHE was appointed main contractor to carry out capping works to a completed cell.
The works included:
• Excavation and placement of 5,400m3 regulatory layer, 300mm thick, across the completed cell
• Excavation and placement of 18,000m3 1m thick clay cap to strict specification
• 14,700m3 colliery spoil was then placed as a lower restoration layer
• 6,300m3 subsoil and 6,000m3 of topsoil were placed in varying thicknesses prior to landscaping which included 15,000m2 seeding
• VHE also installed 320m of perforated HDPE leachate recirculation pipe to tie into the existing leachate system
• All the works were inspected by the CQA Engineer, as well as a visit by the Environment Agency Officer who deals with engineering works on landfills
