Customer:Avondale Environmental Ltd
Value: £1.2 million
Avondale Environmental Ltd operates one of the largest landfill sites in Scotland at Polmont, near Falkirk.
The site handles around 450,000 tonnes of waste a year and we carried out a £1.2 million cross section of essential infrastructure, engineering and restoration works on the site.
In order to assist the construction of future landfill cells, the existing haul road within the site was first realigned. We then constructed two new landfill cells before capping some of the existing landfill cells. This involved the placement of regulating layers, 1mm thick LLDPE liner and geotextile. Construction of the haul road involved the construction of concrete protection slabs to major gas and oil pipelines from Grangemouth Refinery, which transverse the site. VHE extended the existing haul road on the site and installed Armco barriers along the new roads.
The works also required the extension to some of the existing landfill cells which involved the installation of a High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liner and Pozidrain as well as chain link perimeter fencing works. A new pumping station was also constructed as part of the extension works.
The project was carried out under the NEC Option B form of contract and included significant additional works including the construction of a 20,000m2 reinforced concrete slab for bioremediation and a truck parking area. This was formed on re-engineered available soils providing a cost benefit to the customer.
