VHE completed the reclamation of this derelict site, associated spoil tip and adjacent former sewage treatment works and transformed the 60ha redundant site into development plots.
The project included the excavation of 150,000m³ of limestone rock and processing to produce capping for development plots. Relocation of businesses and the demolition of existing buildings was also necessary to make way for the major new development. Some of the development areas necessitated increased foundation capabilities which required extensive dynamic compaction works.
The scheme included the construction of open channel drainage and balancing ponds to direct and reroute the existing Shirebrook culvert, together with the planting of reed beds. Other work included the construction of 4 headwalls and 2 footbridges to connect the network to new paths and tracks.
Ecological and environmental issues included the relocation of greater crested newts and the establishment of wildlife and fishing courses, all in an area prone to flooding.
