VHE was awarded the contract to reclaim part of the former Poplars Opencast Colliery site in Cannock, West Midlands, over a 36 week programme.
The project involved 500,000m3 of earthworks to provide development platforms capable of withstanding on imposed bearing pressure of 80kn/m2, along with treatment of contaminated materials identified during a rigorous investigation of fill materials prior to excavation. The contract also involved the construction of over 1.5 km of on-site highway infrastructure and the provision of services for the proposed development.
Foul and surface water drainage was installed to a combination of adoptable and highways specifications, along with the creation of two new lakes to complement existing ones. Works included the erection of permanent deer fencing and the protection and maintenance of access to fishing facilities located within the works boundary.
The works were completed just ahead of the new M6 Birmingham Northern Relief Road Toll motorway, which runs adjacent to the site.
