Remediation of the heavily contaminated South Site and North Car Park at the former ICI dye works at Blackley, Manchester.
This highly sensitive project required the excavation, segregation and disposal of 140,000 tonnes of contaminated soils together with the installation of water treatment systems. The project was split into two distinct sections; the North Site and South Site.
Works to the northern car park consisted of the removal of Trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated materials to prevent migration to the adjacent river. This involved the installation of sheet piling to protect the river, temporary coffer dams to facilitate excavation below river level, protection to existing services adjacent to the works and extensive pumping and treatment of contaminated waters followed by the reinstatement of the car park on completion.
Works to the south site involved segregation, processing and off-site disposal of contaminated materials arising from dye works production.
This was a highly sensitive project which was carried out in accordance with stringent health, safety and environmental controls.
