Enabling and Restoration works of a former colliery site.
VHE was awarded the contract for the enabling and restoration works of the former North Gawber Colliery in Barnsley for Harworth Group. The 40-acre site will be used for the development of 325 new homes. VHE carefully removed trees and bushes across the site at a time suitable to protect the ecology present. Heathland and orchids were moved to a receptor site.
The works involved the breaking up of all hard materials which could obstruct future development, including concrete slabs, foundations and areas of hardstanding. These materials processed for re-use by handpicking screening and crushing, then stockpiling on site.
Excavation works required a cut fill operation of 120,000 m3 together with dealing with soft spot to provide the required development platform.
The site levels dictated a need for a significant retaining wall in the middle of the site to create 2 separate development platforms. VHE proposed a Reinforced Earth Green wall as an alternative to the proposed Crib retaining wall which gave significant cost savings to the client.
Roadworks included the provision of a temporary site entrance and access road, diversion of an existing public right of way, construction of a new footway / cycleway and footbridge.
Drainage works included the diversion of surface watercourse and construction of an attenuation pond, installation of strategic foul water drainage and supervising a multi utility company, including trenching and ducting works for new permanent services into site.
As the site is close to existing housing and infrastructure VHE provided protection for overhead cables and were considerate with local residents concerns.
