Temple Quays Phase 3, Bristol

The project involved the remediation of the 3.44 hectare former Bristol Diesel Depot adjacent to Temple Meads Station in central Bristol.

The 35 week programme involved:

General excavation of 58,000m³ of material
The break-out of hard material and removal of existing foundations
Remediation of contaminated materials by soil washing
Crushing, screening and processing of site-won materials for recycling and re-use
Off-site disposal of contaminated material (7,000m³ hazardous and 7,000m³ non-hazardous)
Processing of 6,000m³ of hardstandings for re-use on-site
Infill of 56,000m³

The soil washing process involved a range of processes including separation by particle size, screening and crushing, attrition, de-sanding, de-silting, fines flocculation and sludge de-watering by centrifuge.

Approximately 35,000m³ of contaminated materials were treated to reduce concentrations of a variety of contaminants to specified target levels using plant designed and constructed in-house by VHE. VHE re-used approximately 80% of the treated material on-site. A daily average output of 700 tonnes was achieved.
