BNFL Springfields Building B414

The building was situated in a live process area. This meant that an important consideration in the planning process was the minimisation of any disruption that the work may cause. The fact that the project had to be conducted in a relatively small working area required careful planning and close liaison with on-site personnel.

Detailed dismantling methodology was prepared and agreed with BNFL prior to the lowering of the tower, floor by floor, in 7 days. The building was then dismantled at ground level and the waste material disposed of in an appropriate manner. The ground remediation works then included the removal of substantial foundations and constant monitoring for radiological contamination.
