VHE continue to use their experience and expertise in landfill lining works, particularly in specialist and sensitive environments.
Safety and competency were extremely high on the selection process as they included the added logistical procedures for entry onto a site located on a working oil refinery facility. This also added to the complexity of the works. As VHE had previously successfully carried out lining, capping, cell works and restoration throughout the UK, including at facilities such as the Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing and nuclear decommissioning site, this assisted VHE in securing the contract.
The contract involved the capping of three landfill areas within a top tier Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) registered petrochemicals site. The works required VHE to construct capping cover to two of the redundant landfills, creating an impermeable membrane layer which utilised Geo-composite Clay Liner (GCL) and create a hard cover capping to a third using cover material. The combined area of the three areas is circa 64,000m2. The works required the import of materials to create the cap, however VHE were able to process site won material for reuse to reduce the amount of imported material.
