VHE has an in-house capability in lime cement and advanced soil stabilisation techniques to reduce the moisture content of cohesive soil. This improves the bearing capacity of the soil, or reduces the soil’s permeability to prevent the leaching of contaminants.
When added to contaminated soil, cement forms less soluble and more stable hydration products with the contaminants. Cement mixed into soil reacts with water, and forms a physical bond that immobilises contaminants. Solidification lowers the permeability of the treated material, thus inhibiting water movement and preventing leaching.
With the removal of Landfill Tax Exemptions (LFTE), the real cost of disposing of any active contaminated soils will rise to over £84 per tonne, and place an even more significant emphasis on retaining soils on site to reuse.
