Works were recently completed on the contract to replace a section of crumbling stone retaining wall on the Barnsley/ Wakefield boundary just outside Cawthorne.
The works included full closure of the road for a 6 week period. 15m of existing stone wall, up to 3m high was replaced by a reinforced concrete wall faced with reclaimed stone. The works had intended to excavate the majority of the existing road however the discovery of a gas main in the road required some quick thinking and a temporary works solution to support the gas main whilst the excavation for the retaining wall was undertaken. New drainage was also installed and a culverted watercourse that crossed the works had to be maintained throughout. All areas affected were resurfaced together with repairs to an existing adjacent stone walls. These were undertaken as an extension to the road closure.
VHE also carried out works to repair and resurface a 1km section of the carriageway which required working through the night.
