VHE project update February 2016

North Gawber Colliery, Barnsley – Harworth Estates
This large remediation project has been progressing well with recent works including installation of drainage, a new footpath, roundabout and site access, a reinforced earth wall and a footbridge. Alongside this there has been ongoing treatment of mine workings.

Dalmarnock, Scotland – Clyde Gateway
VHE have been awarded a package of outfall works to facilitate development of the Dalmarnock IUIF sites (Integrated Urban Infrastructure Framework) which comprise a network of sites on which VHE have previously undertaken a number of phases of remediation. Some of the former uses of the site include a Chemical Works, Iron Foundry, Power Station and a Gas Works.

The outfall works involve installing surface water drainage in both the highway and within the proposed development area to depths of almost 5m. The project commenced on 1st Feb 2016 with installation of well points to allow safe dewatering now in progress with the works due for completion in May.

Gas Holder Demolition programme – National Grid
VHE’s involvement with National Grid’s Gas Holder Demolition programme shows no sign of slowing down with the company already having been appointed to deliver five more holder demolitions for 2016 in Derby and Leicester, which will include the largest of these distinctive and historic structures undertaken to date, including two with a diameter in excess of 80m.

Rylands Garage, Birmingham – Birmingham City Council
Following our successful remediation project at the Serpentine AMH site in Aston, Birmingham, VHE secured the contract to remediate and prepare for development the former Rylands Garage site on the opposite side of Aston Hall Road. The initial phase which included the removal of tanks and interceptors from the site and the recovery of LNAPL free product from within the ground is now completed and VHE are due back on site for a second phase in April 2016.

Rossington Colliery, Doncaster – Harworth Estates
VHE have recently revisited the Rossington Colliery site to facilitate a cable diversion and then final remediation works.

Sighthill TRA Remediation, Glasgow – Glasgow City Council
Works are now commencing on site to clear trees and carry out further site investigation in order to complete the design phase of this D&B remediation contract.

The remediation of the 55 hectare site will include dealing with contaminants such as heavy metals, hydrocarbons and Galligu; along with earthworks, infrastructure works and demolition to prepare the site for construction of almost 800 new homes, new roads and pedestrian bridges, amenity parkland, a new school and sports campus, student accommodation and much more.

Knowle Avenue, Ashton-under-Lyne – Kier Living
VHE have recently completed phase 1 soil stabilisation on this site on behalf of client Kier Living, incorporating geotechnical improvement of the road formation for new housing areas.
