Using Brownfield Land for Sustainable Development

Supporting the report, latest statistics from the Homes and Committees Agency, a client of VHE, have indicated that there is an estimated 61,920ha of brownfield land in England. 54% of this land is derelict or vacant, while the remainder is in use but with the potential for redevelopment. Also, Department for Communities and Local Government figures (2010) suggest that approximately 35,000ha is considered suitable for housing.

Accordingly, the report calls for a wider push on the redevelopment of brownfield land for retail and commercial development to create sustainable communities and recommends action for ‘Reforming Land Remediation Relief’ in order to overcome financial challenges to those implementing forms of land remediation. The recommendation also includes the details of a pre-tax credit protocol as well as various forms of tax relief.

The EIC see this report as playing a key role in helping the government to achieve its target of approved planning consent on 90% of sites recorded on the new Brownfield Registers by 2020. It highlights the many benefits of brownfield policy, as well as providing refinements to the government’s current efforts to boost brownfield use with a plan of action to ensure safe, sustainable and economic developments throughout the UK.
