Since last year estimates of the cost for cleaning up some of the UK’s historical nuclear sites have slightly decreased from £118 million to £117 million.
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has stated this in its Nuclear Provision Corporate Report, considered the best report for estimating the cost of clean-up for seventeen of the country’s earliest nuclear sites in a programme that will last 120 years.
Including a wide range of disciplines, the estimate is based on the expected costs of decommissioning, dismantling and demolishing the buildings, managing and disposing of all waste followed by a thorough remediation of the land. This work is vital for any regeneration of these properties to even be considered in the future. Benefits include an improvement in soil health and the creation of more opportunities for the environment.
The NDA owns the historic sites on behalf of the Government and is responsible for deciding how they should be decommissioned. Completion is scheduled for 2120, more than a century after the creation of the NDA.
