Rigby Road Remediation in Blackpool Rocks

VHE has been successful in securing a £1.5 million project to enable the development of a 5.95Ha brownfield site in Rigby Road in Blackpool for a £50 million housing scheme. The project, for Blackpool Council, will help create a new residential neighbourhood of approximately 410 houses, to be built by Hollinwood Homes.

VHE has been successful in securing a £1.5 million project to enable the development of a 5.95Ha brownfield site in Rigby Road in Blackpool for a £50 million housing scheme. The project, for Blackpool Council, will help create a new residential neighbourhood of approximately 410 houses, to be built by Hollinwood Homes.

The site, next to Blackpool FC’s football ground, is in two parts to the east and west of Seasiders’ Way and to the north and south of Rigby Road. Both parts of the site are previously intensively developed land from Victorian times with a history of heavy industrial and commercial use that has now diminished. The majority of the West site was formerly used as a gasworks, with two gasometers, a retort house, gas works offices and associated infrastructure. The East site has contained heavy industrial uses in the past, evolving from tram engine shed and municipal incinerator to illuminations depot and donkey stables.

Our site enabling package involves:
• The demolition of 2 gas holders and other ancillary miscellaneous structures
• A comprehensive scheme of remediation works including cut and fill, on-site soil treatment, off-site recycling and capping of the site with crushed arisings
• Engineering works to provide site levels for the roads, services, landscaping and building plots
• Permanently sealing off a disused tunnel which relates to the previous industrial use

WYG Environment is the consulting engineer who undertook the site investigation and preparation of the remediation strategy for the project. The works will be managed directly by the Council’s Capital Projects Team and completed over a 44 week period.

VHE was originally selected to bid for the scheme through being on the Environment Agency’s Contaminated Land Remediation Contractors Framework which extends to 2016.
