Ground Engineering Awards success for VHE

As industry events go, the recent Ground Engineering Awards Ceremony was one of the largest and glitziest to date. The scene was set with over 700 guests filling the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane, London, where the full spectrum of ground engineering companies was present to compete for a prestigious prize in any one of 15 available categories.

VHE was present with two tables for colleagues and partners to hear how we had fared up against some of the biggest companies and projects in Europe in both the Technical Excellence and Sustainability categories.

Our experience of working with Clyde Gateway, Aecom and Provectus on the Shawfield Regeneration Project in Glasgow was used as the basis for our submissions. Having successfully delivered the project using a prototype system for the in-situ treatment of hexavalent chromium at depth, including the first ever use of a more reactive chemical reductant, and meeting our own demanding standards on sustainability through the re-processing and re-use of site materials, it was felt that this project met all the criteria for a winning submission.

Clyde Gateway has embarked on the largest regeneration scheme in Scotland designed to drive forward a massive investment programme over a 20 year period to deliver unparalleled social, economic and physical change. The Shawfield Regeneration Project enabled Clyde Gateway to undertake the task of remediating large tracts of previously derelict and contaminated land in order to launch the National Business District, bringing back much needed jobs and economic growth to the area.

The Project in Numbers
• 90% – reduction in groundwater concentration of Cr(VI)
• 70% – reduction in leachable Cr(VI) in soil samples
• 6721 – number of treatment points
• 70,000m3 – volume of ground treated
• 110,000 – injection data sets recorded
• 50,000 tonnes – amount of recycled construction material
• 800 tonnes – tonnage of CO2 saved against traditional remediation option
• £6 million – financial saving against traditional remediation option

In consideration of the project, the list of success factors above led to VHE and our partners receiving the HIGHLY COMMENDED award in the Sustainability category, a very satisfying recognition of the hard work and innovative thinking that had become the defining characteristics of this complicated remediation project.

Our thanks go to all those who helped in the delivery of the project, the preparation and submission of award documentation and our guests on the day who helped to make this a memorable occasion for VHE.
