Conservation students visit Ravenscraig Park site

Contracts Manager Gavin Broomfield and Senior Engineer Paul Clarkson hosted a presentation before taking New College Larnarkshire students on a site visit of the seven-hectare urban park. During the presentation the NQ Animal Biology and Conservation students had the opportunity to learn about who VHE are, the types of projects we have carried out and more information on the Ravenscraig site, including the innovative work being completed by VHE. Students also had the chance to view site plans and an ecological survey before asking Gavin and Paul questions.

During the visit to the former Ravenscraig Steelworks, students were able to see for themselves the preparatory ground works required before it can be transformed into a public park. The £3.7 million project includes a play area, outdoor gym, sensory garden, visitor hub, events area, sports pitch and network of walking and cycling routes. Following the event, Michael Balzo, Lecturer in Science and Animal Care at New College Lanarkshire, said; “Students found it very interesting to see how much work goes into turning a brownfield into a more valuable site and were able to benefit from the experience of a pioneering company to learn more about the careers that are available in an ever-growing sector. It was good to see they had so many questions!”
