The development of brownfield land was discussed positively in parliament this week as plans were laid out in the latest Housing and Development Bill to make brownfield land easily available for more housing.
MP Greg Clark, one of the main speakers during the debate, said “All Members want brownfield land to be prioritised for development. The more of it that is brought back to use, the more our countryside can be safeguarded.”
Mr Clark went on to re-affirm that “The Bill establishes a new strategy register for brownfield land so that councils can have an up-to-date and publicly accessible source of information about land that is suitable for housing.”
The announcement of the new laws surrounding brownfield sites was met with appreciation from other Members of Parliament and, whilst some reservations were made, Mr Clark again reiterated that all members want to see brownfield land prioritised for redevelopment. The Government strategy is designed to see over 90% of brownfield land accepted for planning permission by 2020.
This announcement is exciting news for brownfield land remediation contractor VHE. The government has pledged to build one million homes by 2020 and, with the focus on brownfield land sites, much remediation work will need to be carried out in the next 5 years to ensure they are fit for housing development.
