As a continued commitment to sustainability VHE are always keen to support the local community, especially in the education system. So when we were asked to support a ‘World of Work’ day at Gooseacre Primary School, Thurnscoe, we were delighted to attend.
As a continued commitment to sustainability VHE are always keen to support the local community, especially in the education system. So when we were asked to support a ‘World of Work’ day at Gooseacre Primary School, Thurnscoe, we were delighted to attend.
Geo Environmental Engineer, Katy Shires, spent the day with Year 5 students. During the day Katy moved around the classroom sitting at different tables and helped the students with various activities relating to careers. The aim of the day was to raise the aspirations of the children.
Activities involved games such as asking Katy yes/no questions to try and guess her job before she gave the students an insight in to her work by creating a ‘typical work day schedule’.
The pupils were then encouraged to talk about what they might like to do when they get older, how they could achieve it and what skills/qualifications they would need. The students also spoke about their skills/hobbies and how these could be relevant to their future career. Katy explained what she wanted to do at their age and how it’s okay to change your mind as you grow up.
The highlight of the day for Katy was feedback from a couple of the students who, at the end of the day, said that they had “learnt that there were different types of engineering” and that “working in engineering could be for girls too!”. VHE promoting equality agenda at the earliest opportunity!
