VHE has been part of this programme through our client, Glasgow City Council, with a Bridges client from Estonia joining VHE on a work placement on the Sighthill TRA project. During her time with VHE Merilin’s confidence levels have increased and she has experienced opportunities that will aid her future. By mentoring Merilin, the programme has also helped VHE employees increase their training skills and strengthen teamwork skills. Due to the success of the six week work placement VHE has now employed Merilin Melesk as an Environmental Engineer. Our work at Sighthill continues to go from strength to strength with VHE expanding our team and presence in Scotland.
VHE Construction Director, Gordon Wilson, also met with Bridges Case Worker Elena Silich and a delegation from Mímir-símenntun who are looking to emulate the Bridges Programme in Iceland.
Mímir-símenntun is a centre for lifelong learning in Reykjavík and is the largest of its kind in the country. Their main purpose is to offer courses, develop educational opportunities and to encourage people in the labour market to practice continuous education and job development. The centre focuses on those who have not completed the upper secondary level of education. They also offer language courses and orientation programmes to anyone for whom Icelandic is a second language.
The delegation consisted of Sólborg Jónsdóttir, who is responsible for Icelandic courses for migrants, Irma Matchavariani, who is responsible for vocational courses for migrants and Anna Kristín Gunnarsdóttir, who is responsible for developmental projects. The visitors left impressed by the professionalism shown by VHE and ideas for new humanitarian projects.
