VHE put latest Hybrid Excavator to the test

As one of the UK’s leading land remediation, earthworks and infrastructure contractors, VHE recognise the significance of fuel used in plant operations as a proportion of overall energy use and consequently carbon footprint.

As one of the UK’s leading land remediation, earthworks and infrastructure contractors, VHE recognise the significance of fuel used in plant operations as a proportion of overall energy use and consequently carbon footprint.

Operating the most efficient plant available is part of the solution, along with good all round management of idling time and eco operation of traditional plant with modern engines.

Hybrid excavators are not new in the plant world but the latest generation are promising significant fuel savings to owners and hirers who are prepared to get the most out of them.

VHE have recently trialled the latest version of the Komatsu HB215CC on projects at Birkenhead and Swadlincote with encouraging results, but not yet matching the manufacturers claimed ‘up to 40%’ reduction in fuel use.

These third generation excavator’s unique system generates energy when the upper structure reduces its speed when slew braking, which is then transferred to an ultra-capacitor for storage prior to being instantaneously discharged when the engine accelerates, much like modern technology in F1 racing cars.

During initial testing at the two projects, fuel savings of up to 15% have been achieved by diligent operation and supervision of the operatives, to ensure appropriate use of the six separate working modes available, saving 150kg of CO2 per 400l tank of fuel.

Additional benefits come from the low noise and vibration levels produced during operation in all modes.

Maximising performance in the future will be derived from the close co-operation with the specialist supply chain in monitoring energy use on a daily basis, to ensure operators are aware of the most efficient combination of eco and working modes, along with economic bulk loading practices, to ensure the maximum gain from this ground breaking innovative excavator.
