Red Lion Wharf, North Fleet
VHE are nearing completion of the first phase of remediation works at Red Lion Wharf in Northfleet which is yet another success for the HCA (Homes and Communities Agency). This former power station site has recently been used as a landing and storage facility for aggregates imported from Norway. The works have included the excavation and re-engineering of made ground and the removal of the power station turbine hall base & walls. This has been completed in phases to allow the relocation of the aggregates. The base of the excavation is being treated using rolling dynamic compaction (RDA) over the 33 Hectare site which is to be developed for mixed use.
CPL (Coal Products Ltd), Chesterfield
Following extensive ecological works to install over 700m of newt fencing at the CPL site, trees have been cleared to allow for the initial phase of remediation to be undertaken. This involved the removal of spent oxide contamination, underground fuel storage tanks and the treatment hydrocarbon contamination.
VHE will return to the site to carry out slab and relic building foundations removal during a turnover of the site once works to the adjacent Chesterfield Avenue site have progressed sufficiently. The Avenue project involves transforming 98 hectares of heavily polluted industrial land back into a place that can be used and enjoyed by both people and wildlife.
The CPL site has been earmarked for redevelopment including residential. VHE will be working closely with design consultancy WYG and client North East Derbyshire County Council throughout the project.
Otter Island Development, Leeds
Remediation works are now progressing well at VHE’s Wellington Road site close to the center of Leeds for Strata Homes. The former industrial site, which is known as Otter Island, is sandwiched between the River Aire and the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The site is being remediated and reclaimed to enable the construction of 113 homes. The site poses challenges to remove obstructions from the surface and below ground whilst protecting the integrity of the adjacent canal, including two sensitive canal lock gates.
