VHE’s success in the Midlands continues with the award of a further contract by Birmingham City Council, to carry out the remediation of Concentric Business Park and JB Foods Sites Advanced Manufacturing Hub (AMH Plot 2) on Aston Hall Road, Birmingham.

This follows the successful remediation of the sites at Serpentine AMH undertaken for Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to the west of the A38 Aston Express Way and Rylands Garage just to the south.

The works at Aston AMH include the remediation of soils and groundwater, platforming by re-engineering made ground including the removal and processing of relic foundations and the demolition and dismantling of perimeter walls adjacent to both live railway and watercourse. The platforming will enable the development of the site for commercial and industrial use.

Previous contracts in Birmingham include the remediation and enabling works at the AMH Serpentine site in Aston, Birmingham. The site, which is in the shadows of both the Aston Expressway flyover and Aston Villa FC football ground, was occupied by a former supermarket and petrol station. The contract included the break out of slabs and foundations, partial turnover of made ground and clearance of below ground structures to facilitate commercial industrial development of the site. Slow worm fencing was erected in advance of the works which also involved the diversion of existing drainage through the site.

Following the successful works at the Serpentine site VHE secured the contract to remediate and prepare for development the former Rylands Garage site which is on the opposite side of Aston Hall Road. Works were undertaken in three phases by VHE. The initial phase included the removal of tanks and interceptors from the site and the recovery of LNAPL free product from within the ground. A former pub was incorporated within the site and was demolished as part of the subsequent phases. Additional borehole installation and monitoring formed part of the initial phase in order to confirm final remediation requirements. This phase of works comprised the removal of slabs and residual building foundations along with the re-engineering of made ground to create a platform for future development.
