Following last year’s success at raising £5,841 for VHE Charity of the Year, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, we can now announce that in 2017, VHE will be supporting Tiny Tickers as our Charity of the Year.
Tiny Tickers works to improve the early detection and care of babies with serious heart conditions, so giving affected babies a better start in life.
Heart problems are the most common congenital birth defect, affecting around one in 125 babies. Every year in the UK, 3,600 babies are born with a defect so serious it requires open heart surgery or other complex procedures during their first year of life. A thousand babies leave hospitals every year with an undetected major heart condition.
Early detection at the 20 week scan and the use of Pulse Oximetry machines in maternity wards could mean that babies get the treatment they need from the first opportunity – which can save lives, improve post-surgery survival rates and lead to a better long-term quality of life.
Tiny Tickers help babies, their families and the health professionals who look after them; training sonographers and other health professionals to spot defects during pregnancy or soon after birth. They offer families the information and support they need, telling parents-to-be about their baby’s developing heart, and giving new parents vital information about the signs of an undetected heart problem in newborn children.
Like every charity they rely on the generosity of their supporters and VHE are delighted to be fundraising and building a partnership with this incredible organisation. We feel sure that we can make a difference.
Jon Arnold, Tiny Tickers Chief Executive, stated: “We’re delighted that we’ve been chosen as VHE’s Charity of the Year, and I’d like to thank everyone who took part in that decision. Serious heart conditions are more common than many people think - affecting around one in every 125 babies - so it’s vital we do as much as we can to help these newborns have the best possible start to life. Our work does just that, and we’re excited that we’ll be able to have an even greater impact thanks to the support of VHE. As a small charity, support from companies like VHE makes a big difference, and we can’t wait to start the partnership. Here’s to a great year of fundraising and helping heart babies.”
