VHE undertook two contracts on the Dearne Towns Link Road in Barnsley as a non-integrated joint venture with Amec Civil Engineering Limited.
VHE was responsible for the earthworks and road building whilst Amec handled the construction of several structures.
The project, split into Phase 1 and Phases 2A and B, together involved the excavation of 1,500,000m³ of material and the import of 370,000m³. Shale from the former colliery sites was mixed and re-used as fill material prior to road building.
In total, 7km of dual carriageway roads were constructed, including one railway bridge and three road bridges. A complex traffic management system was operated during construction to minimise disruption to traffic. The works also included service diversions, pavements and drainage.
