National Grid then adopted an innovative contractual approach to the multi-site project by choosing to proceed on the basis of multiple consultants as well, each of the donor sites within the cluster had an incumbent Engineering Consultant managing the remediation strategy and design for that site. VHE was engaged to undertake the remediation of the four Cluster sites and the establishment of the STC at the Hub site as part of a single contract. We worked collaboratively with the overall Project Manager to value engineer the works in accordance with the original warrantied designs. All of the donor sites were former gas manufacturing plants and excavations included former gasholder tanks, tar tanks, pipework and typical contamination hot spots. At all sites, soils were selectively excavated and screened to identify recoverable components, material requiring treatment was then transferred to the STC and treated on-site. Just under 30,000m³ (70%) of treatable material was re-used on the sites. Treatment options minimised both the disposal to landfill and the need for material imports. Lorry movements on the project were reduced by 97,000 miles when compared to single-site remediation and this saved around 109 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
