Shawfield Regeneration Customer: Clyde Gateway Value: £3.1 million The Shawfield Remediation Project enabled Clyde Gateway to undertake the task of remediating large tracts of previously derelict and contaminated land in order to launch the National Business District (NBD) which will bring 10,000 jobs to the area, meeting 50% of Clyde Gateway’s overall employment target. The remediation of the Phase 1 site required close collaboration across the supply chain to deliver the project using an innovative process for the treatment of hexavalent chromium at depth, believed to be a first in Europe, and the re-cycling and re-use of existing demolition materials within the site. Due to the size of the site and the development of an effective treatment process using a more reactive chemical reductant, the project team designed and constructed a bespoke batching, mixing, distribution and injection plant on a scale never seen before with a central batching area delivering chemicals to ‘satellite’ injection teams. “Following review by industry leaders, this project was Highly Commended for Sustainability at the 2015 Ground Engineering Awards.” Project in Numbers 90% - reduction in groundwater concentration of Cr(VI) 70% - reduction in leachable Cr(VI) in soil samples 6721 - number of treatment points 21,518m2 - area of ground treated 70,000m3 - volume of ground treated 110,000 - injection data sets recorded 3,850,000 litres - volume of CaSx injected 50,000 tonnes - volume of re-cycled construction material 800 tonnes - tonnage of CO2 saved against a soil mixing / disposal option £6 million - financial saving against a soil mixing / disposal option Contact VHE now on 01226 320150 • Visit • Find us on
