VHE have commenced the remediation of No. 4 gas holder at Well Street, Paisley, for gas distribution company SGN.
The 23-metre high gas holder is the oldest surviving column-guided gasholder in Scotland. It was built in 1890 by Hanna Donald and Wilson Ltd (guide frame) and James Goldie and Son (tank) for the Paisley Gas Light Company.
The gas holder is a local landmark and has striking architectural features. As a result, the holder columns and associated structure are listed so will remain in place after the works to grace the Paisley skyline.
Scheduled works include gas holder dewatering, demolition of the holder crowns, lifts and outbuildings followed by the infilling of the holder to ground level. Site works are due for completion within 12 weeks. Throughout these works, time-lapse photos and video footage will be recorded to capture the gas holders’ heritage.
