VHE return to Harworth Colliery
19 September 2019
VHE’s success in delivering sites for development for client Harworth Group continues with the commencement of another phase of works on the site of the former Harworth Colliery and coking works site in Nottinghamshire.
This time at the Simpson Park development VHE will construct the existing ponds into lined attenuation ponds and associated water management system. The existing network of three individual connected ponds are being drained and following silt removal will be reformed in to a single larger pond that will attenuate the surface water to serve the site that is now being developed for residential end use. The ponds will be planted with aquatic species to form part of the water management system.
Other works include;
- Site clearance
- Earthworks to form the profile of the new pond
- Lining the pond with a Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL)
- Placement of subsoil, topsoil and seeding and planting works within the pond
- Installation of Precast Concrete Inlet, Outfall Headwall and emergency overflow structures
- Installation of surface water drainage and construction of a new sump structure
The previous successfully completed works on the same site included remediation of the former coking works. Harworth Colliery operated as a coal mine until 2006 and occupies a surface area of over 70 Hectares and in conjunction with the production and processing of coal the former Bawtry Coke works was also operational on the site between the late 1930’s and 1960’s.
