Biophysical Remediation

VHE has significant experience of undertaking biophysical remediation using in house resources. Bioremediation is the treatment of contaminated material involving the natural degradation of contaminants by bacteria.

The majority of bioremediation schemes we have undertaken involved the placement of material into windrows. Where space is restricted, we have also undertaken schemes using biopiles which are aerated and heated internally by pipe work, enabling treatment in colder weather conditions.

Our experience has included major bioremediation projects at former gas works in Beckton and Portsmouth, where 50,000m3 and 49,000m3 of material was treated respectively. More recently we have conducted large-scale bioremediation projects at gas works at Hull and Huddersfield.

VHE holds an Environment Agency Mobile Treatment Licence which includes in-situ and ex-situ bioremediation (windrows, biopiles and in-vessel bioreactors).
