The project involved the remediation of the 3.44 hectare former Bristol Diesel Depot adjacent to Temple Meads Station in central Bristol.

The 35 week programme involved:

  • General excavation of 58,000m³ of material
  • The break-out of hard material and removal of existing foundations
  • Remediation of contaminated materials by soil washing
  • Crushing, screening and processing of site-won materials for recycling and re-use
  • Off-site disposal of contaminated material (7,000m³ hazardous and 7,000m³ non-hazardous)
  • Processing of 6,000m³ of hardstandings for re-use on-site
  • Infill of 56,000m³

The scheme included the treatment of contaminated groundwater using soil flushing techniques to recover free phase hydrocarbon contamination with array of 18 pumping wells, which was undertaken under VHE’s Environmental Agency Mobile Treatment Licence.
