Removal of Heat Exchangers
WAGR BNFL Sellafield

Shepley Engineers were responsible for the removal of the four heat exchangers. Access was created to various levels by specially built scaffolding. To enable the scaffolding 6.3m diameter holes were cut in the steel shell of of each heat exchanger (HX) dome.

The job involved the provision of airlocks constructed out of timber framework, together with visqueen sheeting with Hepa Filter extract fans ensuring negative pressure. After removal of all redundant items the HX was sprayed to encapsulate any remaining Alpha contamination. Each HX was lifted out with special lifting bands using 1000 tonne and 450 tonne cranes.
