Dismantling of BNFL Building B62

This project involved the decontamination, demolition and site remediation of Building B62 for British Nuclear Fuels Limited, located within a live nuclear fuel processing plant at Springfields near Preston.

Various previous processes had left a cocktail of contamination, including:-

  • Uranium oxide
  • Chemical residues from the production of tear gas and mustard gas
  • Asbestos sheeting and lagging

Following the careful dismantling of the five storey structure, including a reinforced concrete chimney, all arisings were monitored prior to despatch into the appropriate waste stream. All foundations were then broken out and contaminated soils removed prior to the re-instatement of the site. Contaminated material was removed to a licensed landfill site.

The entire project was executed within a ‘controlled’ area, requiring detailed planning and liaison with the on-site Radiological Protection Advisor and health physics personnel.
