Inglis Barracks

Customer:Defence Estates

Value: £0.5 million

VHE Construction was awarded the contract to de-contaminate areas of this former MoD Barracks and workshop areas, which were radiologically contaminated with radium226.

The Barracks dated back to World War 2 and were used as a Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers depot until the sale of the workshop areas to Brent Council.

A large volume of housing stock was also transferred to private ownership. The remaining site area was used by British Forces post office and as a large area is now in private ownership this has necessitated the clean up. The remediation project required the careful excavation of materials and their segregation into low level and exempt waste for disposal off site.

The works were of a sensitive nature due to the operations taking place within an operational council depot and in housing areas accessed by the general public.
